Keep the label attached if possible. It can help avoid confusion between similar shades, especially with neutral carpet colors.
Use your sample in the room where the carpet will go. Lay it near baseboards, under furniture, beside wood floors, against tile, and next to paint colors. If you are planning a stair runner or custom size rug, place the sample where the finished piece will sit. This gives you a better sense of how the carpet will work with the rest of the room.
