The square yardage number you receive as an answer indicates the amount of flooring for the finished project. You should allow for  an overage in flooring material and understand that in some cases the overage will be much higher depending on the size & shape of the total area you are working with.

How much carpet or flooring material do I need to order?

The rule of measuring twice and cutting once applies to this scenario. It’s also not a bad idea to have a slight overage as later down the road you may need that extra piece for a repair or for other purposes in your flooring needs.
